Eban (EE-buhn)

Common clue: Abba of Israel

Born on this day in 1915 in South Africa, Abba Eban was educated at Cambridge University.  He achieved the rank of major in the British army during WWII.  From 1949-1959 he served as Israel’s first permanent delegate to the United Nations.  He served concurrently as ambassador to the United States from 1950 until he was elected to the Knesset in 1959.  He also served as Israel’s foreign minister from 1966-1974 – a time which covered both the Six-Day War (1967) and the Yom Kippur War (1973). He died in 2002.

Like many diplomats in the Middle East, Abba Eban was often frustrated by deliberate foot-dragging. "They never miss an opportunity," he once remarked of an Arab opposition group, "to miss an opportunity."

"His ignorance," Eban remarked on another occasion, "is encyclopedic."
