Bambi, based on the 1923 book Bambi, A Life in the Woods by Felix Salten, is an animated feature produced by Walt Disney and originally released to theaters on August 13, 1942 by RKO Radio Pictures. The main characters are Bambi, the young deer prince of the forest, his parents (the Great Prince of the forest), his mate Fauline, and his friends Thumper (a rabbit) and Flower (a skunk). Another character in the story is Bambi’s aunt, Ena. Ena’s voice was done by Mary Lansing (1911-1988), an actress who is, perhaps, best known for her many appearances on “The Andy Griffith Show”. “Don’t be afraid, Bambi,” his mother said. “This is little Faline, and this is your Aunt Ena. Can’t you say hello to them?” “Hello, Bambi,” said the two deer. But Bambi did not say a word. “You have been wanting to meet other deer,” his mother reminded him. “Well, Aunt Ena and Faline are deer just like us. Now, can’t you speak to them?” “Hello,” whispered Bambi in a small, small voice. “Come and play, Bambi,” said Faline. She leaned forward and licked his face. [Source: Disney Storyland Treasury]
