Definition: Latin for “to be”; existence; being

North Carolina’s General Assembly adopted the words “Esse Quam Videri” as the State’s motto in 1893.

“Esse Quam Videri” means “to be rather than to seem.”  Basically it means that living in the present is better then reminiscing about the past or dreaming of the future. It also can be interpreted as, ‘truth is always more important than illusion’.
