Nehi (NEE-high)

·          Common clues: Radar's favorite pop; classic grape soda; Company that became Royal Crown

·          Crossword puzzle frequency: 6 times a year

Nehi is an American flavored soft drink, currently available in orange, grape, peach, strawberry and blueberry flavors, presently manufactured by Cadbury-Schweppes.

The company called the Nehi Corporation adopted that name in 1928 after the Nehi fruit-flavored sodas became popular, it had previously been called Chero-Cola (from 1912 - 1928) and Union Bottling Works (from 1905 - 1912). The name was later changed to Royal Crown Company (in 1955), after their RC Cola brand. It was founded by Claud Hatcher.

The name Nehi comes from the expression "knee-high", which was used by a route salesman to describe the height of a competitors bottle, and later inspired the long-necked bottles of the new Nehi soda.

Trivia
