January 1, 2005 Let The Adventure Begin Thanks for stopping by. I hope you're enjoying my first attempt at a web site. I began “solving” crossword puzzles about twenty years ago. I had one of those jobs which allowed me several 2-3 minute periods of idleness. Feeling the need to fill the void with some meaningful pursuit I discovered crossword puzzles. The first 200 puzzles were humbling. Many times I would only have about three or four words before I was stumped. After a few years I became acquainted with a number of words that seemed to show up again and again. Some of these words I was familiar with, but many were like another language to me. Someone has even given this language a name: Crosswordese. Now, after approximately 7000 puzzles, I feel I have a good enough grasp of this language to complete most of the puzzles I start, however there is still much to be learned about this language. I still don't know how to pronounce many of the words. I still don't have anything but the shallowest understanding of the meaning of many of the words. That is why I have created this web site. As I said earlier, this is my first attempt at a web site. I would really appreciate your comments. Please let me know if there are errors, if any of the links are dead, if I've spelled a word wrong. Do you have a nomination for Clever Clue of the Month? Perhaps you'd like to debate whether a particular word deserves to be considered “Crosswordese”. My plans for this particular page will be to publish musings on the world of crossword puzzles. I may publish excerpts of your e-mails. I may discuss news items that touch on this world. I may just ramble... Let the adventure begin...
