February 21, 2005 Letter Rip? Linda Seebach of the Rocky Mountain News in Denver hasn’t given up on us yet. Last month, you may recall, she asked us for some help with a clue and answer which didn’t seem to make sense. She came to us for help. Regretfully, none of us were able to come up with a solution for her. Well, she hasn’t lost faith in us yet. She’s back with a new problem. This one showed up in last Friday’s Wall Street Journal crossword puzzle. She writes, My office colleague across the aisle and I both worked the Friday Wall St. Journal puzzle Feb. 16, and though we filled in all the little squares, we can't figure out the themed answers. If her office colleague is anything like some of my office colleagues, it’s pretty serious. In my office we have the “Terminator”. If she can’t figure it out, there’s something wrong with the puzzle. The theme for the Journal’s puzzle was: Letter Rip. There were several clues related to the theme: Clue: Thermometer failure? Answer: FAHRENHEITSTOP Clue: Sheet used in typing duplicates? Answer: MIDDLECARBON Clue: Key to a set of tests? Answer: ANSWERBATTERY Clue: Milk and cookies? Answer: KINDERGARTENRATIONS Clue: Bungee cord? Answer: GRAVITYSTRING Clue: Win in a long winning streak? Answer: VICTORYEIGHT Clue: French teacher's width? Answer: MAITREDIAMETER Now, can anyone out there tell us what these answers have to do with “Letter Rip”? I await your reply.
