February 23, 2005 Solution! The Wall Street Mystery has been solved. Fellow cruciverbalist, Linda Braun, realized that some letters needed to be “ripped” from the bigger words… Here's what I think is going on in the Wall Street Journal puzzle. All the answers are extensions of phrases that employ letters. The Fahrenheitstop is an extension of F-stop (camera focal length setting). Similarly, the other words are extensions of middle C (note most of us can reach), A battery (middling small power source), K-rations (chewy camp chow), G-string (thongy thingy), V-eight (vroom motor), and maitre d (server with nose in air).
