March 19, 2005 A New Champion Perhaps you’ve heard – Tyler Hinman, 20, won the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament last Sunday. How does that happen? When I was 20 I could probably figure out about three words in an average puzzle. He’s not working on average puzzles. Actually, the word that stumped his final opponent was ‘Zolaesque’, for the clue "stark and richly detailed, as writing”. Hinman is the youngest winner in the 28 year history of the tournament. According to his parents he’s always been interested in puzzles and eventually began creating his own. Some have been accepted by the New York Times. He said he’d spend his $4000 prize money on tuition. "I can’t even celebrate," said Hinman, wearing jeans, a T-shirt, and a baseball cap marked with the insignia of his fraternity at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. "I’m not old enough to go to a pub and drink myself stupid."
