July 15, 2006 Who writes better puzzles, humans or computers? In a recent Slate article, Cruciverbalist, Matt Gaffney asks the question, who writes better crossword puzzles, humans or computers? He points out the obvious – that humans certainly still, and always will do most of the 'heavy lifting' since they still have to come up with the themes and the clues, but most constructors rely heavily on computers to fill in most of the grid. But, who can come up with the best grid? In seeking an answer to his question, Mr. Gaffney set up the Ultimate Crossword Smackdown, a contest to answer the question once and for all. You can read his article here.
